The first batch of an experimental vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus is expected to arrive in Monrovia Liberia on Friday.
The shipment will be the first potentially preventative medicine to reach one of the hardest hit countries.
The 300 doses of vaccine is produced by British company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the US National Institutes of Health.
About 30,000 volunteers including frontline health workers are expected to be experimented.
A version of the vaccine has already been tested on 200 healthy volunteers across the UK, US, Switzerland and Mali.
GSK says it has been found to have an acceptable safety profile so far.
Meanwhile some expert says that, with Ebola cases falling, it may be difficult to establish whether the vaccine offers any protection against the virus.
But it is only in affected countries that experts can determine whether it provides adequate protection against the virus.

POLITICS:‘Arrest Accra Mayor’

Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuye 301009

Nana Annor Amihere, Executive Director of Safety Ghana, has launched a scathing attack on the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, for flouting road safety regulations with impunity.

According to him, the Accra Mayor does not have the right to use motorcade or blow siren when plying the roads in the city.

Nana Amihere, who made this observation to DAILY GUIDE, after a press conference organized by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in Accra, said the action of the mayor was clearly against the law and therefore he must be arrested because the law does not permit him or anybody to use motorcade, except the president of Ghana.

Nana Amihere, who is also the chief of Aryinasi in the Elembelle district of the Western Region, noted that institutions that have been permitted to use sirens are the National Ambulance Service and the National Fire Service, stating that “Apart from them nobody is allowed to use sirens”.

According to him, “The police have not given Oko Vanderpuije permission to use motorcade so why is he using it and why are they not arresting him?”

The traditional ruler noted, “The Mayor cannot be allowed to do whatever he likes in the country. The laws of the country must be obeyed irrespective of who you are or the position you hold.

He blasted Ministers and deputy ministers who also use siren and motorcades. “Who gave them the right to flaunt the laws of Ghana,” Nana queried and added, “If they do that with the excuse that they are in a hurry then who should be in the traffic? Who in the traffic is not in a hurry?”

Nana Amihere said they were voted into power to serve the people not to lord over them.

He called on government to put sustainable measures in place to develop the country to ensure that the traffic situation eases.

The Accra Mayor was recently in the news for allegedly ordering his bodyguard – who has since been identified as Lance Corporal George Akunor – to impound a vehicle belonging to Lawyer Nii Akwei Bruce-Thompson in a typical
Hollywood
style, with the police officer alleged to have shot the tyres of the vehicle.

The incident was said to have taken place in front of the famous Mantse Agbonaa Park in Jamestown, Accra, in broad daylight.

Oko Vanderpuije has since denied that he ordered the bodyguard to shoot the tyres of lawyer’s car.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bruce-Thompson has indicated that he would not rest until the appropriate action had been taken against the police officer.

The court presided over by Francis Obiri in separate judgements found the accused persons guilty of their offences and handed each of them a 20-year jail term.
In the case of Fresh Boy, prosecution said he had on January 5 this year at Atomic Junction robbed one Rosina Asare of her handbag containing one Nokia mobile phone, one Blackberry Q10 mobile phone valued at GH¢ 1,200, a cash amount of GH¢200 and other personal items.
According to the prosecutor, DSP Patrick Morkeh, the complainant, who is resident at Agbogba in Accra, at 10pm at the aforementioned date alighted at first bus stop close to PRESEC and Atomic Junction to cross to the other side of the road to board another vehicle to Kwabenya. He added that as soon as she alighted the convict emerged from the bush and attacked the complainant, threatening to cause physical harm to her.
The police officer said Fresh Boy collected the aforementioned items and bolted into the nearby bush.
DSP Morkeh stated that Rosina reported the case to the police who were on night snap check duty at the scene of the incident and saw the convict and another accomplice emerging from the bush.
He said Fresh Boy and his accomplice, upon seeing the police officers, took to their heels but were arrested upon a tipoff.
The police officer said Fresh Boy in his caution statement admitted the offence and led the police to retrieve Rosina’s handbag without its contents.
Amid Yakubu
It is the case of prosecution that the accused and one Kojo, currently at large, on December 26 last year at Omanjor, a suburb of Accra, robbed one Budu Yaw Joseph, a cabbie, of his wallet containing his driver’s license, voter’s ID card, a G-seven mobile phone valued at GH¢300 and a cash sum of GH¢180.
At his first appearance, the convict admitted the offence and was accordingly sentenced on his own plea.
He was handed 15 and 20 years for conspiracy and robbery respectively.
The prosecutor said at 10:30am while Budu was working with his vehicle, Amid boarded the vehicle from Sowutuom Mambo to Omanjor, adding that on reaching a section of the road at Omanjor, Amid, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, pulled a knife on Budu.
The prosecution indicated that Budu, sensing danger, quickly obliged and gave Amid the aforementioned items.
The prosecution said after the act the duo escaped, indicating that on January 2 this year Budu went to a drinking spot within the vicinity and spotted his mobile phone with a salesgirl called Debora Asiedu and made a report to the police, leading to the arrest of Debora.
In her caution statement she (Debora) mentioned Amid as the source and he was subsequently arrested.
The prosecutor disclosed that a search conducted in his (Amid’s) room revealed Budu’s mobile phone together with his wallet.
